Monday

In wine country now

Well we hopped on our little plane and flew about a thousand km south towards the cape region, the most southern point of the indian ocean.  We were pretty glad to leave Durban - we were only there one day but it's a pretty scary city. Our tour guide gave us strict instructions on where we could go and not go...so we just decided to spend most of our time in our room.  We did take a city tour with another couple and I can't count how many times creepy - strung out - wackos came banging on our car windows begging for money.  The harsh reality is there really isn't a middle class there - you're either stinking filthy rich, or you're living out of a cardboard box...literally.  We were driving down this one street where there were multi million dollar vacation homes on one side of the street and decrepid shacks and cardboard box houses littered with garbage on the other side living without water or electricity.  Very disturbing actually.

Thankfully most of our time is spent in the little towns which are much more civilized and perhaps some of the most beautiful scenery in the whole world. Yesterday we drove to this little beach area that seriously looks exactly like Peggy's Cove.  We did a 4km hike up this mountain and walked across these scary-ass suspension bridged over the indian ocean.  Then today we took a cruise ship along the Knysna River where it meets with the indian ocean.  we stopped at a little island and then took a 3 km hike (and not just a stroll down the beach...this was climbing up and through rocks through dense rainforest and up very VERY steap inclines.)  Yes, this nearly killed us.  ...but the views were unbelievable.  This afternoon we just hung out by the courtyard pool - it was about 34 degrees today with a lovely breeze, so we lazyed around bragging about how athletic we've been these days.  Mind you - all the walking doesn't even come close to making up for the deliciously authentic South African meals we've been getting here.  Almost every meal is a "childhood memory" for henk - and he's been enjoying every moment.

Tomorrow we are going to a wildlife santuary where we are hoping to finally see a real life lion.  fingers crossed!!!

After tomorrow we head to Cape Town for 3 nights and then back to Jo'Burg to see Henk's family for the last week!!

Hope everyone is well - and we'll be in touch soon!
